Nicotiana alata
This show-stopper has white trumpet-shaped flowers that exude an intoxicating scent in the evening. Bushy and growing up to five-feet tall with multiple sturdy branches, it's a lovely cut flower which can be used as a bedding plant, or to create a shady windbreak in the garden. Easy to grow, preferring full sun or partial shade, it is a prolific self-seeder that can tolerate heat and drought. Nicotiana can be attractive to aphids, making it an excellent trap plant for your vulnerable veggies.
Direct sow in spring, pressing into the surface of the soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which usually occurs within 10-20 days. Or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost of spring. Keep seedlings moist until they become established.
