Allium sativum ophioscorodon

Type: Hardneck

Group: Standard Purple Stripe

When to Plant: 4 to 6 weeks before soil freezes. In warmer regions, planting ranges from late September/early October until the last week of November.

Harvest Season: Mid-Late

Also referred to as Samarkand, because it was purchased in Samarkand, at an Uzbekistan bazaar in the 1980s by John Swenson. The standard purple stripe family is the oldest of the garlic groups. Dependable, great flavour, beautiful colouring, and a large number of cloves per bulb makes it a must have for any garlic collection. Strong and distinctly complex flavour. One of our best roasted garlics.

Grow: One of the last variety to emerge after winter, making Persian Star a good garlic to plant in colder, unpredictable climates. Since these tend to mature later in the season, they are often one of the last to harvest.

Flavour: Strong and distinctly complex flavour. One of the sweetest varieties to bake, you will think someone added honey to it! Check out some great garlic recipes here.

Seed specifics: ~9 cloves per bulb

Please make sure you are ready to plant some garlic this season before submitting your order!
